3 Tips to Save your Furniture from your Pets

Living with a dog with chronic skin issues can be challenging if you are obsessed with keeping a neat and tidy home like me. I can’t tell you how many rugs, throw blankets and pillow covers I have been through but I bet my hubby can surely tell you. At some point I came to the conclusion that I have dogs and my home will NEVER be perfect but do I really want to live in a museum anyway…not really. I just needed to find better ways of removing the yuck that comes with pets because who am I kidding, I could never make my dogs stay on the floor. I love having them up on the couch cuddling with me. I am a dog person after all!

Sofa Covers

My first line of defense is a sofa cover. I bought this one online from Amazon. We have a leather sectional so I needed something that wouldn’t slip off and would protect the leather from nail scratches. This one has little silicon rubber dots on the back that keep it in place. It is machine washable and dryable and you can bet these babies get washed weekly! If you have a fabric sofa or chair, you wouldn’t necessarily need one with the rubber dots on the back. You can also buy them without. My advice, invest in furniture covers or buy slip covered furniture. You will thank yourself for the inevitable stain that is sure to come at some point.

Slip Covers

I totally get if you don’t like the look of chair or sofa covers and decide to go the slip covered furniture route. I have an IKEA slip covered sofa in my den that I’ve had for over seven years and it still looks really amazing thanks to OxiClean White Revive. This is my second trick and this stuff is amazing! It removes stains and whitens and brightens colors safely. I usually wash my slip covers once a month and always use this to keep my sofa looking like the dogs haven’t been laying all over it because lord knows, they think it’s theirs!

Baby Wipes

My third tactic for in between washings is baby wipes. Yes, simple baby wipes. Baby wipes remove all kinds of dog yuck from everything. Plus they leave a nice scent behind which helps if your pet has any kind of skin issue. Pets with skin issues don’t always smell the best even when we keep up with the bathing routine. Baby wipes are great to remove allergies from their paws as well as any dirt which eliminates it getting on your furniture in the first place.

Trust me, I’ve learned lessons the hard way. Prevention is way better than ruining an expensive piece of furniture. I hope this helps and I’d love to hear your ideas on ways you save your furniture from your pets.
