Best 3 Rugs if You Own Pets

Did you know that most interior designers say rugs are the one thing not to splurge on even if you don’t have pets? Do you know why? Because you don’t want to break the bank on something that will eventually get soiled and need to be replaced even if you don’t own a pet. Our rugs are subjected to at least a quarterly dog puke and the occasional butt drag so we definitely don’t go high-end in the rug department. I’ve found that I can still get the look I’m after by shopping for the right material at Wayfair, Overstock or Amazon. Below are the top three choices of rugs if you own pets.

1. Low Pile Synthetic Rugs

Low pile synthetic rugs are a pet parent’s top choice. Synthetic rugs are durable, easy to clean and most are non-absorbent so they won’t stain easily. An added bonus is they are fairly inexpensive so you can replace them yearly like we do. I buy most of my rugs from Wayfair. *Tip: Pick a patterned rug that will help hide dog hair, traffic wear and the inevitable stain that is sure to come.

2. Cowhides

Cowhides are another top choice for pet owners. They don’t hold dust or dirt like other rugs and are easy to maintain. A frequent shake or vacuum is all that is needed for cowhides. If your decor colors allow, purchase a cowhide the same color as your pet and you’ll never see the pet hair. I buy my cowhides online from icowhide.com. Most of their rugs are $99.99 which means you can replace them yearly too!

3. Outdoor Rugs

Outdoor rugs are made to hold up to the elements so they are both water and stain resistant and extremely durable so they will also hold up to pet nails very well. Most outdoor rugs are also made from synthetic materials and look just as good when used indoors. I usually shop Wayfair or Overstock for these as well. Again, the best option is to pick a pattern that will go with your decor to hide hair and stains.

Avoid

  • Try to avoid shag rugs at all costs if you own pets. I don’t even want to think about the nasty things that could be hiding in a shag rug. They also tend to get eaten up by the vacuum.
  • High pile rugs are another type of rug I try to avoid. Hair and dirt tends to get in the fibers and can be difficult to remove.
  • Fringed rugs are something I avoid at all costs. Fringe or tassels scream “toy for me” for both cats and dogs.

You can have both stylish rugs and pets under the same roof if you know what kind of material to look for and where to buy them inexpensively. Ensure whatever you choose is both durable and easily cleaned and won’t break the bank. Remember, do not splurge on rugs if you own pets!
